Knowing
the Signs
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, is a common condition that impacts men as they age. It’s estimated that half of men in their 50s have an enlarged prostate. This number skyrockets to 90% for men in their 70s and 80s.
The signs of BPH can vary, but the symptoms gradually get worse as the condition becomes more advanced. Symptoms to watch out for include:
-
Blood in the urine
- Frequent or urgent need to urinate
- Increased urination at night
- Trouble starting or stopping urination
- Urinary tract infections
- Weak urine stream
Surgery Isn’t Your Only Option
BPH can be painful and cause bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems. The good news: Our highly trained interventional radiologists can treat your BPH with nonsurgical techniques, so you can get back to your normal activities right away.
Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) is a nonsurgical outpatient procedure that offers shorter recovery times and fewer complications than other treatments for BPH. Our radiologists use image guidance to access blood vessels on each side of the enlarged prostate gland, then use small beads to block the blood flow to the prostate, which causes the prostate to shrink, relieving symptoms often within days. You’ll return home the same day and be well on your way to feeling better.
