Painful Fibroids? You're Not Alone
Uterine fibroids are common, affecting 25–40% of American women. Fibroids generally appear during your 30s and 40s and can cause symptoms until menopause. Our interventional radiologists perform a minimally invasive procedure called uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) that can provide significant and lasting relief for these fibroid symptoms:
- Anemia
- Bleeding in between periods
- Constipation
- Heavy, longer or more frequent periods
- Lower back pain
- Pain, pressure or heaviness in the lower belly
- Pregnancy complications
- Problems urinating (going too much or being unable to go)
Effective, Nonsurgical Relief
The interventional radiologists of Vascular & Interventional Specialists offer uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) to women who are seeking relief from fibroid symptoms without major surgery, such as hysterectomy (removing the uterus) and myomectomy (surgical fibroid removal).
During this minimally invasive procedure, an interventional radiologist uses image guidance and a catheter to insert small particles into the uterine arteries. The particles block the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink. Symptoms should decrease as the fibroids continue to get smaller in the following weeks and months.
